Protecting Your Investment: What Homeowners Need to Know About Florida’s Elevate Grant Program
As Florida homeowners, we all understand the unique risks that come with living in paradise—especially during hurricane season. But here’s some good news: a new state-run program is offering significant financial support to help residents better protect their homes from flooding and storm damage.
Introducing Elevate Florida: A Game-Changer for Home Resilience
The Elevate Florida program, recently launched by the state, is designed to help homeowners fund major home improvements that reduce the risk of storm and flood damage. These improvements may include elevating your home, full reconstruction, or adding wind-resistant features—all aimed at boosting long-term resilience and peace of mind.
What’s Covered?
The program covers at least 75% of the total project cost, with the homeowner responsible for up to 25% of the expense. For major reconstruction projects, the maximum grant contribution is $220,000—a substantial incentive for those needing major upgrades.
Who Qualifies?
To apply, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen and an adult homeowner residing in Florida.
- Be able to commit to your portion of the project cost.
- Own a residential property that is either:
- Located in a FEMA-designated flood zone,
- Classified as a repetitive loss property through the National Flood Insurance Program, or
- Substantially damaged from previous events.
Why This Matters Now
The state has allocated $400 million in federal funding for this initiative and plans to assist approximately 950 properties. With over 1,500 applications already submitted (most from right here in Pinellas County), the demand is high—and growing fast.
Project Timelines
Depending on the complexity of the work and the approval process, homeowners can expect timelines ranging from 7 months to 18 months. That said, the sooner you apply, the better your chances of approval and getting on the construction schedule.
How to Apply
If you're considering elevating or hardening your home, this is an incredible opportunity to offset your costs. You can find more information and application details on the Florida Division of Emergency Management website.
